Before you take part
About this study
This research examines music listening, cultural experiences, and related evaluations. You will listen to music using headphones and answer questions about your experiences and background. Some details of the research aims will be explained after participation to avoid influencing your responses.
What participation involves
Provisional estimate: approximately 45 minutes in total across two waves 1–3 days apart: 5 minutes for baseline and 40 minutes for the second wave, including the required 30-minute interval. Timing will be checked in a pilot before recruitment.. You will complete a baseline questionnaire, return 1–3 days later to listen to one music excerpt, and return again at least 30 minutes after listening. During that 30-minute interval, please do not replay, search for, discuss, or try to identify the music, and avoid listening to other music. You do not need to keep this page open during a waiting interval.
Voluntary participation
You must be at least 18 years old. Taking part is voluntary. You may stop listening, close the page, or withdraw at any time without giving a reason.
Compensation
The total reward for completing both waves is £5: £1 for the baseline questionnaire and £4 for the second wave, including listening, the interval, and follow-up questions. Completed waves are paid separately, even if you do not complete a later wave. Screening and early-withdrawal payments will be confirmed before recruitment.
Possible discomfort and benefits
Listening or answering questions may cause mild fatigue, emotional reactions, or hearing discomfort. Use a comfortable volume in a quiet, safe environment. Stop if you feel uncomfortable. There is no guaranteed direct personal benefit.
Data and confidentiality
We record your answers, Prolific ID, randomized condition, and listening and response timestamps. Your Prolific ID links sessions and supports payment checks; these data are pseudonymous, not fully anonymous. The study platform and hosting providers may process technical logs needed to deliver the service. Research data will be accessible to authorized research staff. Reports will present aggregate findings without publishing your Prolific ID.
Retention and data withdrawal
Research data will be retained for 1 year from collection, then deleted according to the study data-management procedure. To request withdrawal of submitted data, contact the researcher with your Prolific ID. Removal may no longer be possible once data have been de-identified or incorporated into aggregate analyses that cannot be separated.
